In 1983, Wendy Stubley spent a month’s rent on her first good camera. For years, she pursued photography as a hobby; recording her family, her garden, and scenes from hiking expeditions while developing her photographic skills. Recently, Wendy made the career decision to become a professional photographer.

While Wendy’s photography business specializes in family and animal portraits, shooting pictures is only part of Wendy’s photographic work. Her studio offers custom-made digital special effects, photos on canvas, and 6-foot high banners to give customers unique products that can be displayed as artwork in their homes.

The portable nature of Wendy’s equipment allows her to photograph families in their homes. This is ideal for people who want portraits in their backyards, or are too busy to make the trip to a studio. Wendy has experience photographing lots of different families; from 3-day-old newborns, to newly engaged couples, to large groups of families with wheelchairs and pets.

After a visit to the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society, Wendy offered to use her photography skills to help the community learn more about the pets available for adoption. She now goes once a week with her mother Peggy Coe to photograph animals for the Waterloo Chronicle’s “Love at First Sight” article. Wendy is pleased to be able to help in this way: “The more people see these animals, the better chance the animals have for adoption. But the photoshoot is the easy part – it’s hard for me to leave when we’re done each week because I always fall a little bit in love with the animals I photograph.”

One of Wendy’s recent photography projects was a calendar of some of the pets that have been adopted from the Humane Society. “I admire the beauty, dignity and grace of the pets we have photographed for the calendar. Many of them have been through terrible hardships in their lives, yet they turn to us with trust and love and are rewarded by being welcomed into our homes. I’ve tried to capture their dignity and happiness in the photos of this calendar.”

Photographing pets is always a rewarding task for Wendy. “It’s incredible to be able to combine my love of photography with the respect and affection I feel for these animals.”

Wendy lives in Waterloo with her husband, two teenagers and their black lab, Kira…..and she takes her camera everywhere she goes!
